The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the by-election held in Katsina North Senatorial District of Katsina State, Alhaji Ahmed Babba Kaita has won the election by a landslide.
In the results announced by the Returning Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Hudu Ayuba Abdullahi, the APC candidate scored 224,607 out of the total 294,050 votes recorded. The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Kabir Babba Kaita, who is the elder brother of the APC candidate, came a distant second with 59,724.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), six political parties contested for the seat, which became vacant after the death of Senator Bukar Mustapha. The other parties were Democratic Alliance (DA), Green Party of Nigeria (GPN), Masses Movement of Nigerian (MMN) and Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).
Katsina North Senatorial District is the home district of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently vacationing in London. The APC defeated the PDP in all the 12 Local Government Areas that make up the district.
In a related development, the APC has won the controversial by-elections in the Koto-Karfe Federal Constituency of Kogi State. The elections were marred by low voter tunr-out, vote buying, thuggery, killings and ballot-box snatching. The APC candidate scored 11,078 to the PDP’s 7,094.
Also the by-election for Bauchi South Senatorial District was held yesterday. The results so far released by INEC in 4 of the LGAs making up the district show the APC candidate winning 3 while the PDP won in ne. The results of the remaining 3 LGAs are still being awaited having been delayed by the heavy rains in the area.
